The Most “Network-Dependent” Prop in Basketball

An assist requires two things to align – the passer setting up the shot, and the shooter making it. That dependency is what makes assists the most network-dependent stat in basketball, and the most fascinating prop to bet on.

If your point guard hits eight teammates with potential assists in a half but those teammates miss four of them, you have four assists. Same passes, same vision, same playmaking – half the production. That’s why the same elite point guard can hand out 14 assists one night and 6 the next without changing anything about how he played.

Assist Rate and Why It’s Sticky

Assist rate is the percentage of teammate field goals that a player assists on while he’s on the floor. A primary playmaker might sit at 35-45%. A secondary creator at 20-30%. A pure scorer at 10-15%. The number is publicly tracked and remarkably stable across a season – far more stable than rebound rate, which fluctuates with matchup specifics.

The reason assist rate is sticky is that it reflects a player’s role in the offence, and roles don’t change game-to-game. A team’s primary point guard runs the same number of pick-and-rolls every night, throws the same kick-out passes, makes the same drive-and-dish reads. The number of assists the system produces varies, but the share of total team assists going through that point guard stays roughly constant.

The implication for prop pricing: if you know a player’s assist rate is 38% and you can project the team’s total assists for the night, the player’s assists prop is the simple multiplication of the two. Teammate Shooting Variance

The most painful assists prop loss I’ve ever taken happened on a night when my point guard hit teammates with a season-high 12 potential assists. They missed seven of them. He finished with five assists against my over of 8.5. The pricing model was right. The game was wrong.

Teammate shooting variance is the noise floor under every assists prop. Even a perfectly modelled projection can land 3-4 assists below the line on a cold-shooting night, or 3-4 above on a hot one. There’s no way to predict cold or hot shooting in advance with any precision – it’s variance.

What you can do is tilt the probability distribution. Look at the teammates the playmaker most often passes to. If those specific teammates are above-average shooters, the variance is centred higher. If a key shooting teammate is out injured, the variance is centred lower. The maths is straightforward – assists are the integral over the shooting percentage of receivers – but the inputs are scattered across multiple data points and most punters don’t track them.

The other lever is opponent defence. Some defences encourage long passes that generate assists; others trap the ball-handler and force pull-up shots that don’t generate assists. A point guard against a switching defence might hand out 11 assists; against a trapping defence, 6. The same player. Different game.

Pace and Offensive Style

Pace lifts everyone’s counting stats – assists included – because more possessions means more shots means more potential assists. A 100-possession game produces about 22 made field goals on average, of which roughly 60% are assisted, giving you 13 assists distributed across the team. A 96-possession game produces about 21 made field goals, of which 60% are assisted, giving you 12.6. The difference of 0.4 team assists translates to roughly 0.15 individual assists at typical 38% assist rate. Small but real.

Offensive style matters more than pace. A team that runs ball-movement-heavy offence – lots of swing passes, kick-outs, drive-and-dish – produces more assists per made field goal than a team that runs heavy isolation. The difference can be 65% assisted vs 50% assisted, which compounds into a 25%+ swing in total team assists.

The pairing that produces the highest assists numbers is a ball-movement team in a high-pace matchup. The pairing that suppresses assists is an isolation-heavy team in a slow matchup. These edges are usually small relative to the volatility, but on prop overs and unders, even half an assist is worth pursuing because the bookmaker often misses the second-order effect of style on top of pace. Back-Up PG and Lineup Risk

The single biggest catastrophic risk on an assists prop is the starting point guard sitting unexpectedly. With NBA App viewership in the UK up 52% during 2024-25, more punters than ever follow individual playmakers – but late scratches still catch markets and bettors out.

If the starter is ruled out 90 minutes before tip-off, the prop usually voids and your stake is refunded. If he plays 12 minutes and then gets pulled with a hamstring tweak, the prop is live and almost certainly heading to under. The asymmetry favours the bookmaker on these events because most casual punters back overs.

The pre-game checks: the official injury report 90 minutes before tip-off, the coach’s pre-game press conference if available, and the warm-up reports from beat reporters. The structural insight: the back-up point guard’s assist rate is rarely well-priced when he’s promoted to a start. If a team’s regular point guard sits and the back-up gets 28 minutes for the first time in months, his prop is often hung at his career average rather than his current run-of-form. That’s where soft pricing lives, and that’s where sharp UK punters strike.

Do ‘hockey assists’ count?

No. The NBA tracks only direct assists – the pass immediately preceding a made field goal. The pass before that pass, sometimes called a hockey assist, is tracked separately as a ‘second assist’ on advanced stat sites but doesn’t appear on the official box score. Settlement on UK assist props uses the official NBA box score, so only direct assists count toward the prop number. If you’re modelling the prop yourself, ignore second assists entirely – they don’t matter for settlement.

How does back-to-back rest affect assist props?

Back-to-back games typically suppress assist numbers in two ways. First, the starting point guard’s minutes are often capped at 28-30 for rest management, cutting his potential assist count by 15-20%. Second, tired teammates shoot worse, which converts fewer of the playmaker’s potential assists into actual assists. The net effect is usually a 1-2 assist drop on the prop projection. Books generally adjust for this, but the adjustment isn’t always sufficient. If you spot a back-to-back where the line looks set on full-rest assumptions, the under is often the cleaner side.
